Secretary's Day - Department's Way to Celebrate, Recognize and Appreciate the Contribution, Hardwork and Sacrifice of the Often Unnoticed and Less Regarded Staff

Secretary's Day is a day observed in many countries around the world to celebrate the work that secretaries, office assistants and other administrative staff do. One cannot deny that the amount of work that these efficient secretaries do is fast paced and energy consuming and it is not to be under - estimated.

These are the people with the toughest jobs but still do it with a bright face, a smile, even if they are having a really bad day. They are the ones that are always available to do all the admin work despite the workload dumped on them.

Humanity and society need to pause at times and reflect about these seldom appreciated fellows. They ought to be celebrated. They deserve a thank you gesture too.

The National Secretaries Association was formed to recognize the contributions of administrative personnel to the economy. A notion to support Secretary's personal development and growth was thus advanced. Added to this was an intention to also help attract workers to this administrative field as it was becoming a scarce skill and unattractive.

This is how secretaries celebration day was finally initiated. South Africa has its own Secretary’s Day celebration observed on the first Wednesday in the September month on annual basis. Hence this year it was celebrated on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.

To celebrate this day, the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management pampered all Office Secretaries with a two nights getaway treat; from the 4th to the 6th September 2019 at a luxury Hotel and Spa Parlour, Sun City in Rustenburg.

On the first day the respectable ladies and gentlemen of the offices were taken out on a Game Drive, for the purpose of unwinding and relaxation as well as diversion before the next hectic day of the workshop.

Meanwhile, on the second day of the workshop these colleagues were empowered with skills and confidence to cope and manage their office environment as well as techniques to treat their supervisors, visitors and people in general. More focus and emphasis was on how to manage the office environment efficiently. Important aspects like dealing with technological instruments, machinery, tools and equipments was tackled. The matter of office staff, practicing skills in managing your own responsibilities and adopting good practices in managing the customer interface through a range of communications techniques was dealt with.

As expected and deservedly so, after the workshop they were pampered with body massages at a Spa by professional masseurs. This treat was quite welcome as it would assist to relax these hard working fellows.

The day ended well, with a Gala Dinner organised for later that evening.

The "suits" may come and go...but it's the professional expertise of secretaries, administrative assistants, and receptionists who keep the engines running. Echoed the event organisor, Ms Tshepe, Departmental Manager for Special Programs.
